Frequently asked questions
We now have an FAQ list that we hope will help
you answer some of the more common ones.
1. Should I bring my child to swimming lessons if they have been ill?
Never bring your child swimming if they have a significant illness, e.g. diarrhoea, chicken pox, ear infections, conjunctivitis. We recommend a 7-day delay if your child has had sickness or diarrhoea.
2. What swimming attire should I/my child wear?
Swimming appropriate clothing includes a swimming costume. Swimmers’ hair should be tied up and away from their face, including fringes. Swim hats are optional. We recommend boys to wear swim trunks as opposed to beach shorts.
Swimmer nappies must be worn by all children under the age of three years.
3. Do I need goggles?
Goggles are recommended but not compulsary. Please make sure they are well fitting. Practice in the bath!
4. What are the pool rules / codes of conduct?
Please shower before entering the pool.
Blue shoes must be worn around the poolside.
No running or shouting around the poolside
5. What do I bring?
Please bring your swimming costume / shorts, towel, swimming hat (optional), goggles, warm dry clothes for changing into after and drinking water
6. What type of goggles are best?
If you would like your child to wear goggles, please buy ones with clear lenses. Dark lenses can be hard to see through when they get a bit steamed up and the swimmers need to be able to clearly see the teacher and the other swimmers.
7. Can parents watch the lessons?
Yes – although we don’t allow parents on the poolside as this can distract your children and others in the class, lessons can be viewed through the window in the corridor. Most parents however choose to relax in the cafe/bar until their child has finished their lesson.
8. Is it ok to swim if I have a medical condition?
It is usually possible to swim with most medical conditions, lessons can be adapted to suit the needs of swimmers. It isn’t advisable to swim after surgery or if you have any wounds on your body. Prior to starting lessons we’d love to discuss any medical needs with you, and potentially you will need approval from your doctor. Speak to us and we can work that out with you!
Where required, medicine can be kept on poolside (inhalers, epipens etc), and the person (parent or guardian) responsible for administering the medicine should also stay close. If your child is able to administer their own medicine please let us know.
9. What swimming badges do the children work towards?
At SPLASH we work towards Swim England Learn To Swim Stages 1-7 Awards [link to PDF of the award stages]
10 . Are teachers qualified?
All our teachers are Level 1 qualified and above and also hold a teachers lifesaving qualification.
11 . Can I take pictures of, or record my children swimming?
You must get the permission of the swimming teacher in charge of the lesson or the person in charge before taking photos or videos of anyone other than your own children.
